Cowgirls And Their History
Cowboy boots may be named after cowboys, but cowgirls wear them
, too. When the west was being settled, women even worked in the cattle drives. Some women even ran the drives themselves.
Women played a large role in the development of the west. They worked right alongside men on the farms and ranches. On small ranches and farms, this was especially common simply because families couldn't afford to hire out a lot of their work.
It was the Wild West Shows, however, that brought what we now call cowgirls. Cowgirls were performers in these shows. They would shoot, ride, and rope for audiences all over the country.
Before these shows became popular, sidesaddles were the only respectable option for women when riding horses. With the invention of split skirts, however, women were able to ride astride, just as men did. This made it possible for women to compete with men in many events without worrying about offending the audience.
Cowgirls soon became a part of rodeos, too. Women and men competing for the same titles became more and more common. In many instances, women were taking the same risks as men, riding the same rough horses and bulls as the men did.
Women were excluded from men's events, however, in 1925. Most women's events were discontinued, also. Even today, when women are technically allowed to compete in any event they wish, this practice holds true.
In all women rodeos, however, women are given the chance to put on their cowboy boots, and shine in all events. They are even able to compete in bronco and bull riding events. Unlike normal rodeos, these rodeos do not have any restrictions for women.
This does not mean that cowboys and cowgirls are not equal, though. Cowboy boots were named after the cowboys, but the cowgirls were just as influential as the men in development of western culture. The color of girls' cowboy boots might be different than the mens', but they are fit for the same work.
