Coyote: The Mediator

Many of us have seen the screwball cartoon antics of Wile E

. Coyote, chuckling along to his inventiveness and murky mischief. Pop culture aside, the mythological portrait of the Coyote runs deep, far, and wide. Long revered by todays Native Americans, carried through centuries old stories, legends and ritual, Coyotes enduring popularity not only serves an educational purpose but one of lasting profundity. The mysterious soul of Coyote touches specifically upon our own sadness, humour, wisdom, and sexuality, all the while survivingthrough this gamut of our emotions, revered as one of the great natural predators . And once reflected upon us, individually or collectively, we ourselves mirror, ponder, and once again reflect these deep seated feelings emanating from our soul. When you see a Coyote, what do you feel for her?

Along with the Crow, Coyote is not unlike a go-between agent calling forth the mysteries that bridge Life and Death, moving between two distinct realms that conditionally touch each other, and inevitably all of us, with infinite possibilities of closure and renewal.

Ever the trickster, Coyote always brings some form of action into playaction that stirs immediate reaction, whether by wit, wisdom, or brawn, Coyote calls upon us for a reason as well as a response. When you see a Coyote, what do you think of him?

And when Coyote energy becomes manifest in a human being, that person's effect upon us is always a bit perplexing. You can recognize a "coyote person" when they always seem to turn up unannounced and catch you by surprise. They are usually very friendly and have an uncanny way of immediately bringing out your deeperemotional side, allowing you to feel comfortable in airing your passionate feelings. A Coyote person is a master at pulling your strings and getting right to the heart of any matter. Once they strike a nerve, they usually keep eye contact with you until such time as you have both acknowledged that a deep truth has been revealed. Then, just as your head is spinning in assimilating this shared epiphany, your Coyote friend changes the subject to lighter matters and moves on. No attack or sense of domination here, just pure Coyote energy coming through a person that you probably regard as an acquaintance rather then a close friend. Indeed, we all have the ability to carry the teaching energy of Coyote for the benefit of another soul at some point in our lives.

Taking both sides, coming and going, holding ground then tipping, tripping..this is the path of Coyote..one of the Earth and one of the Sky. Be perplexed yet not alarmed nor confused for the appearance of Coyote never seals our fate..the appearance of Coyote asks us to appeal fate..indeed, thereby effecting our very destiny..And whether or not Coyote truly knows of any of this is wherein the myth lies..
