Cozumel Vacation: Where Adventure Awaits

Cozumel is a subtropical paradise located 12 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula coastline

. The largest island in Mexico, this 28 mile long, 10 mile wide island encircled by white sandy beaches was a small, little-known fishing community before being made famous in a 1961 documentary by undersea explorer and film maker Jacques Cousteau. Enamored by this Caribbean jewel, Cousteau described it as one of the most exquisite diving areas in the world with its sparklingly clear waters, brilliantly colored tropical fish, and abundance of coral reefs. Offering underwater visibility of 200 feet, Cozumel is now a favorite destination of divers and snorkelers from around the globe.

Cozumel is home to the world's second largest barrier reef with 25 miles of this valued resource protected as a National Park by the Mexican government. Cozumel offers more underwater adventures than awe-inspiring coral and wildlife viewing, however. During the 1600s, the island served as a base of operations for pirates and privateers, including the infamous Henry Morgan and Jean Lafitte, who left in their wake many a sunken shipwreck to explore along with the natural caves, tunnels, and labyrinths.

There is as much to see and do on land in Cozumel as there is in the water. The great Mayan culture that ruled the area for over 2000 years before the arrival of 15th century Spanish explorers, left behind a legacy of their advanced civilization. The immense pyramids of Chichen Itza, the Mayan cities of Tulum and Tikal, are within reach for a day excursion. On the island of Cozumel can be found the fascinating San Gervacio, once a sacred Mayan site where women traveled from the mainland to worship the fertility goddess Ixchel. It has been restored within a beautiful park filled with rich Mayan history and culture.

There's never a lack of nightlife in the plentiful beach bars and night clubs. Duty free shopping allows for bringing home gifts for everyone on the list without breaking the bank. From a day relaxing on the pristine beach or enjoying the crystal clear water scuba diving or snorkeling to an evening of shopping and dining, a vacation in Cozumel is a feast for body and spirit.

Cozumel has something for every vacationer. This tropical piece of heaven is a rejuvenating respite for busy city dwellers seeking escape and relaxation. Adventure seekers find unique and exciting experiences and challenges. History lovers follow in the footsteps of ancient Mayan fishermen, farmers, and warriors. It's a vacation destination for every member of the family and a lifetime of memories.
