Cracked Heels Can Be Very Painful!
Are Your Cracked Heels Cracking You Up?
Are Your Cracked Heels Cracking You Up?
I know just how you feel about cracked heels. They are a royal pain in the foot! I have had personal experience with cracked heels and through researching and trying some remedies, have found relief from my cracked heels. There are some things that really work to get rid of cracked heels and keep them from returning. Once you know what causes cracked heels and why they happen, you can treat your own cracked heels and walk pain-free once more!
Dry skin is the beginning of cracked heels.
When your feet get really dry, a callus starts to develop on the bottom of your foot around the edge of your heel. As your feet get drier and drier, the callus gets thicker and thicker. Add pressure from standing and the callus begins to crack. As those cracks get deeper and wider they start to become very painful. Imagine if you put plaster on a balloon and let it harden. Then when you blow up the balloon, the balloon expands and the plaster cracks. With cracked heels, your heel wants to expand outward, but the dry skin on your foot doesn't let it, and it cracks! Cracked heels can be very painful to walk or stand on. If your cracks get really deep they may bleed and get infected. Getting treatment for these cracked heels is vital!
These are the RISK FACTORS for cracked heels.
There are some things that contribute to cracked heels:
Being overweight - this puts too much pressure on your dry feet, and they crack
Being diabetic
Wearing open-back shoes or sandals too much. Take extra care of those exposed heels if wearing sandals
Being predisposed by having a dry skin condition such as psoriasis or ezcema
Not moisturizing your feet
Prolonged standing on your feet
Cracked heels are common, but here are some things that will help.
Many people suffer from cracked heels, but there are some things I have found to be helpful in treating cracked heels.
Wear closed shoes as much as possible
Use a good moisturizer twice daily on your feet (oil-based)
Remove the callus on your heel by using a pumice stone on your feet EVERY TIME in the shower
Try not to stand on your feet more than necessary
Wear socks to bed to lock in moisture
Pamper your cracked heels with these treatments, and you should see a noticeable difference. Take special care to remove the callus from your heel with a pumic stone. Did you know the splits or cracks cannot heal unless the callus is removed so the cracks are not deep? I have found this to be very helpful in treating cracked heels.
Do I need to see a doctor?
By all means, if none of these treatments for cracked heels seems to be working, see your dr. A doctor can treat your cracked heels more aggressively with prescription medicine for your feet, as well as strap your cracks together until they heal.
Pamper those feet and soon the pain from your cracked heels will be gone!
