Craft ideas for older children may often include projects which require a higher

level of concentration, such as glass or pottery painting, or wood craft. Acrylic paints may be a good choice for these craft ideas, as some items may be placed outside or used regularly, for example, key-rings and bird feeders. Acrylic paints may tend to provide stronger colours in a single coat though it may then be appropriate for an adult to varnish the item to protect it from the elements.

Paints are available in a wide range of colours, as well as in metallic or glitter shades which can be used to create different effects. As well as a variety of paints, paint pots and water pots are also essential items for pouring paint into and washing brushes. A few spare paint pots or palettes may also be beneficial, as some children may wish to mix colours together to create different hues. Large, thick bristled brushes are more suitable for painting large areas, perhaps with a background colour. Thinner and finer bristled brushes will be necessary for creating detailed designs and patterns. They dispense a controlled amount of paint and are held in the same way as a pen or pencil, allowing for detailed designs or writing to be carried out.

Whilst acrylic or poster paints are suitable for painting wood and paper, glass and fabric items may need special paints. These can be bought either in small pots to be used with fine tipped brushes, or in the form of paint pens which can be used in the same manner. Fabric paints are very similar, and can be used for many craft ideas such as painting felt finger puppets or perhaps for personalising t-shirts. Advantages of using paint pens to complete craft ideas and projects are that they tend to be neat and easy to use and do not create too much mess (which can sometimes be a problem when using open pots or palettes of paint).

There is also no need for brushes and water pots, which can easily be knocked over or dropped. However, using paint pens may make mixing different colours together to create new shades difficult, and it may also be tricky to tell how much paint is left in a pen before it will run out. Due to this, it may be a good idea to buy several sets of paint pens in different colours, to make sure that you have a back-up set available when the current pens begin to run out. Buying in bulk can be a good way to ensure that you have enough craft supplies to go around.
