Create Your First Web Page With HTML

Advances in technology allow the average user these days to do what might have been unthinkable a few years ago. Having a technical computer education is no longer a requirement. In our time, even those with no computer knowledge or who merely visit a few websites now and then can get involved in what happens on the Internet.

The Internet is truly another world, albeit a virtual one, where people exist and interact. One of the ways by which information is provided is through a website. A website is a collection of pages that contain texts, images, audios or videos, and is uploaded on a server.

How to create my own website has been a favorite topic of many online authors. A search on Google or any of your favorite search engines will yield many results on how to do this and many of them are presented in very easy to follow steps.

When I wanted to make my own website many years ago, everything was created in the simple program called Notepad (for those of you PC users). Having been made to believe that I needed an intricate knowledge of technology, I could not believe how easy it was to create my own website.

There are distinct advantages to creating your own website. You should do so if you want to be in control of the information layout as well as the content. More often than not, if you decide to create your own website, at first it can be a case of trial and error. This should not scare you as it is the best way to learn.

Although there are now many web page languages, a simple web page can be created by a series of basic HyperText Markup Language (HTML) codes. Wikipedia calls HTML the "basic building-blocks of webpages." HTML codes consist of tags that normally come in pairs and are enclosed between angle brackets.

An example of is tag is < body > < /body >. < body > is the start tag and anything that comes in between the start tag and the end tag < /body > will show up in the website.

The most basic of HTML codes that create a complete website look like this:

< TITLE >This is my website< /TITLE >

< /HEAD >

< BODY >

Welcome to my website!

< /BODY >

Enter these codes in Notepad (or TextEdit, for Mac users). You can write the codes in lowercase and they will work just as well as in all caps. Make sure that the application is in plain text mode. Save the file as first .htm (or first .html). You can replace the file name "first" with any other word but you have to add .htm or .html to it.

When you have done this, you have created your first web page! Go ahead and open it in your preferred browser and marvel at how easy that was. Great job!
