Create Your Own Garden Compost For A Better Garden
If you're not knowledgeable about organic gardening
, you might not be familiar with composting. Compost is an organic material used in horticulture to help fertilize and enhance the quality of the soil. Your plants require minerals and nutrients, and compost gives them that, in addition to being a mulch and a soil conditioner. Compost is also extremely effective in keeping more water in the soil for the plants to grow.
There are numerous strategies for composting, which you can use, and the easiest appears to be the no-turn composting method. It's common for a pile of compost to be turned once a week to hasten decomposition but with the no-turn method, it's not necessary. All that you should do is put in your compost pile a lot of rough materials. A thing that works is adding straw, which allows the pile to be aerated by creating air pockets. This approach can be just as effective as the turn-over method. Using this approach, though, you have to get your compost from the bottom of the pile, and don't forget to keep putting in organic materials on top, together with the coarse materials as well.
When you have lots of leaves in the fall, you can use them for making your compost. You can collect all of the leaves and set them in a pile under a shady spot. It has to be a place that also happens to be damp and moist. You'll need the air to pass through your pile so make sure that the pile is loose. The compost would be ready for use in your soil within four to six months. Compost made from leaves may not have sufficient nutrients to be used as a fertilizer but it is good as a conditioner for the soil.
Fruits and vegetable waste make really good composting material, as they contain lots of carbon and nitrogen. Other table leftovers may be used also but they may bring in pests and animals. You can also include grass clippings, shrub clippings, pine needles, kelp, seaweed, eggshells and coffee grounds for your compost. If that isn't sufficient, you can also include tea leaves, corn stalks, sawdust, wood chips, cardboard and shredded paper in your compost. It's best to cover your compost so that pests will not come and create problems. As you put in new materials to your compost, it is wise to add lime or calcium at the top. Doing this is going to help eliminate the stench coming from your compost pile.
Composting is just as difficult as you want to make it. As compost may be made up of waste around the house, you can recycle and save cash. Composting can make your gardening a lot easier.
