Most people overlook the drink coaster. It is there to function, to protect more important surfaces. It is just a useful little thing, not worth paying attention to. However what most people don't realize is that coasters can actually be an elegant part of a room's dcor. They can also be quite versatile, allowing you to mix and match colors, and spread various patterns throughout the home.

One thing that some clever designers do is to mix and match coasters in various colors, to create a two toned effect in a space. This allows you to choose coasters whose colors either contrast, or compliment one another. If the room is built on a particular color scheme, you can both reinforce and oppose this using something as simple as a set or two of coasters.

This is a trick which really only works with coasters of the same type. If you have square bulky slate coasters, and round delicate marble pieces, the effect will just look chaotic. However if you have two different colors of the same type, then you can get really creative, playing tones back and forth against one another.

Another interesting trick is to purchase question and answer coasters. These are pieces which often come in sets, with one coaster having a trivia question of some sort on it, and another piece in the set having the answer. In this way these functional preventative pieces can actually be turned into a game, with guests trading them back and forth to try and pair up their question with the correct answer.

While the coaster may be a subtle and relatively unnoticed piece of a room's dcor, it doesn't have to be. A little creativity will allow you to create elaborate effects which will spread out over a room like a net, casting color and pattern in its wake.
