Creating Creative Glass Designs

Glass painting is an arts and crafts activity that can be done all year round

, whatever the weather, and there are a wide range of glass paints available to help create colourful and imaginative designs. Many glass art projects will come in the form of a ready to paint kit. These are very popular in the form of sun catchers, which can be found in many different shapes and designs, such as cars, animals, flowers and underwater scenes. The sun catchers are not made from glass, but from transparent plastic, which can be decorated with glass paints. All good sun catcher kits will come with either small stands to display the finished work, or thread with which to hang the finished sun catchers in a window.

Sun catcher kits can be fairly easy to complete because the designs feature either raised or heavy black lines which help children to paint in the design easily and neatly. Similar projects such as painting hair bands, rings and pendants can also be found. For a less structured glass painting activity, decorating drinking glasses or glass votive candle holders can be a more challenging activity. These can be decorated with glass paints and given as personalised gifts, or perhaps themed to an occasional or holiday.

Painting glass objects such as candle holders will require specialist glass paints. These can either be found in the form of pens or traditional pots and tubes. Glass paints should be available in a wide range of colours, and it is also possible to find glitter or pearlised glass paints, to create unique designs. Any glass paints which are being used on items such as drinking glasses or glass platters should be fully water resistant when dry. It is a good idea to check the specifications of any glass paints before you buy them, to make sure that they will be suitable for the project that you are planning. Painting glasses and candle holders may give children the opportunity to create their own personalised designs, and it is a good idea to have a wide range of colours available for them to choose from. If you are using glass paints from tubes or pots, then it is advisable to buy a range of brushes in different sizes to help children create their perfect designs. Larger brushes are great for creating bold patterns and painting background colours, whereas smaller brushes with thin bristles are needed for more detailed designs, and are particularly good for writing.

You may prefer to choose glass painting pens, which are easy for children to hold and have a slim fibre tip which is very good for creating detailed designs, painting borders, and writing. Painting pens are also available in a wide variety of colours and effects, such as glitter and pearlised pens. The style of glass paints that you choose will depend greatly on the activities which will be carried out, the glass surfaces which will be decorated, and the age and abilities of the children who will be painting their designs.
