Reports show that since England hit the credit crunch and spending across all areas of the economy has slumped, people have been dramatically downsizing their cars to save them money on road tax and car insurance, as well as reducing their running costs. It is far cheaper in terms of fuel if you have a new hybrid car with a really small engine, as opposed to driving a diesel guzzling car that is costing you fifty plus pounds to fillup once a week.

One in five motorists downsized during this period, with nineteen percent of car owners selling up in favour of a smaller model. Fifteen percent of people who downsized stated that they have changed their car for ethical and environmental reasons. This mentality not only saves the individual driver money, it also highlilghts an increasing attitude amoung drivers that the environmental impact of driving is not only being adressed, but people are actively trying to control it in order to safeguard the world for the future.

Car insurers have recommended that if you are planning on downsizing to a smaller car, that you choose a popular make. This way, if there are any issues with the car and bits need replacing, it will be much easier and cheaper to buy the parts, as opposed to buying a rare car or something not in production any more.
