Credit Repair - Avoid Making These Common Mistakes To Get Back To Good Credit Standing

Most people get bad credits because they just can't handle the amount of debt they have gotten into

. They either put off payments for tomorrow then forget about it altogether; or they don't have money because they just got laid off recently. The bottom line is they will suffer the consequences, like rejected applications for loans and mortgages.

There are many credit repair companies that can help them in this situation; though some people prefer to just do the repairing themselves, while there are those who simply cannot afford the cost it entails. Whatever the case may be, here are some common mistakes that should be avoided.

1. The credit-to-debt ratio is a factor in calculating your credit score. In credit cards, this is basically the amount of credit you use against the limit allowed. So always avoid maxing out on your credit cards. Stay at least 20% off your mark to attract investors.

2. When you get your credit report, the first thing you should check is if there are errors or discrepancies; and if you notice any, you should immediately dispute them. If you hire a credit repair company, this is the first step they'd take to fix your credit. They are experts on disputing errors and this is basically the service you are paying them for. This is a long process but when properly it can eliminate those errors - as long as they are just that - errors. Beware that you or the credit company don't overdo the disputes as attempting to dispute everything in your account can lead to worse situation.

3. Do not ignore your collection agencies while you are in the process of a dispute because this is tantamount to an admission that you do owe them money. They have 30 days to validate your concern and within these 30 days, they should provide proof against your dispute. Simply ignoring them would mean you admit the debt in question.

4. Almost 15% of your credit score is based on the length of existence of your credits. Some people panic and close their old unused accounts. What they don't know is that they are doing more harm than good. Keep them active by using them for small purchases at least once a month.

5. Avoid opening too many or too few credit lines. Too few cannot attract lenders while having too many can be tough to handle, especially if you can't afford to pay them all. The general concept that people have in mind is that one credit card is being responsible. Lenders actually think you are responsible if you can handle several accounts but certainly not up to ten. You can have at least three to five lines opened.

Credit repair can really help you when you are in a financial jam, whether you do it yourself or you get help from companies. However, you sometimes tend to unconsciously do things that can push you deeper into the quagmire. Learn to avoid these mistakes and you'll be on your way to a new credit worthy standing.
