In addition to my recent musings on the Jumeirah Beach area of Dubai, I also feel that the Dubai Creek area is worthy of a few words when thinking ahead to a Dubai holiday.

Dubai Creek is a sea inlet that stretches for 14km, forming a natural harbour right in the heart of the city. Imagine the Grand Canal in Venice but on a much bigger scale, with the city of Dubai surrounding you and the water seeming alive with water taxis, sleek yachts, tour boats and exotic water birds!

The Creek separates the Bur Dubai (old town) from the more modern Deira side and the buildings and architecture reflect this, allowing you to see how Dubai has grown and developed in the past few decades, with dramatics skyscrapers and impressive shopping malls.

It is highly recommended that visitors take an Abra Boat across the creek, to experience the local form of transport. The boats journey from different points along the creek and only cost 1 Dirham for a 10 minute crossing a cheap, easy and fun way to cross the Creek.

For a longer cruise along the Creek, an Arab Dhow Tour is available, allowing you to learn about the historical and modern architecture on both sides of the Creek. Around midday the Creek becomes hectic with Abra boats and other water taxis taking locals to the Mosques for daily prayers.

If you sail towards the Northern end of the Creek, you can see the Impressive Al-Maktoum Bridge, the famous modern landmarks of Dubai and the grand trading port.

You will also pass the world renowned Dubai Creek Golf Club and Creekside Park, perfect for family fun.

The Creek is always a bustling scene of activity where trading traditions have been established for centuries. If you aren't really a water baby you can casually walk along the wharf bank, where cargo of food, craft goods and modern appliances is heftily unloaded throughout the day and night.

While discovering the hustle and bustle of the trading wharf you will also find a magical spice souq, selling authentic herbs and spices from around the Middle East. Try the unique flavours of saffron, frankincense and rosewater and be sure to purchase some dried fruit or nuts.

With the vibrant colours and sounds of the local people, historic buildings and enchanting sea boats the Creek is a historic landmark of Dubai, capturing the traditions and industrial culture of Dubai and the Middle East.
