Crib To Bed, Is Baby Ready?

We all know that as first time parents we tend to over analyze almost every decision we make when it comes to the first baby

. One of the most asked questions a mom asks is, "When do we move our child from a crib to a bed?" Just for the record, there is no hard and fast rule as to when this should happen. Each child is different. Most of the time it is a personal decision based on your child's behavior and finances available. However these questions may give you the confidence you need in making the decision.

Does age matter?

If your child is between the ages of one and a half and three and a half they are generally ready to move into a bed. Some are more ready emotionally and physically than others, and I would not rush this if your child seems to be sleeping well and not trying to climb out

Have you lowered the mattress to the lowest level?

If you have lowered the crib mattress to the lowest level and your child is not able to climb out you can wait a bit longer before changing to a bed. This time would be good time to be saving money for a bed, unless your crib is a convertible crib.

Is your child able to climb out of the crib on their own?

This is the biggest clue of all. Some children are naturally born climbers while others are content waiting for someone to come and get them. If your child is climbing out of the crib you definitely need a bed. You don't want them getting hurt climbing out and falling onto the floor, or by chance getting their leg or foot caught in the crib rail and be dangling until someone hears screams!

How tall is your child?

Typically when a child is about three feet tall they are considered big enough for a big kid bed. If your child is tall for their age and are content they might be more comfortable in the crib. Another indication is if the child's belly button is at or above the crib rail when in a raised position they have a greater chance of toppling over even if they were not trying to get out. And in this case I would be moving them into a bed.

Have you started potty training?

If you are in the process of potty training, I would definitely move the child into a bed. By sleeping in a bed it will be much easier for them to get to their potty chair if needed.

As I said in the beginning there are no hard and fast rules. Some children transition well to a new bed while others cling to their crib. You know your child better than anyone else, and as long as you use your best judgment you won't go wrong. Enjoy this time; it really does go by much too fast.
