Records go back to cricket first being played in the south of England in the 16th century

. By the end of the 18th century, it was Englands national sport. It was then taken overseas as the British Empire grew. By the mid-19th century the first international matches were being played. It is now so popular, it is played in over 100 countries.

The Laws of Cricket are maintained by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the governing body of cricket, along with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which has been the guardian of the Laws since it was founded in 1787.

Types of matches

First class cricket

Where teams have 2 innings each, and play lasts between three to five days, notching up a minimum 6 hours each day.

Test cricket is the highest standard of first-class cricket. A Test match is an international fixture between teams representing those countries that are Full Members of the ICC., Test cricket is generally understood to have begun with two matches between Australia and England in the 1876-77 season in Australia.

Test cricket is the ultimate test between cricketing nations and is still very much the most prestigious form of the game, although the One Day International and Twenty20 formats are becoming increasingly popular with audiences.

There are 10 test playing teams worldwide;

Australia, UK, West Indies, NZ, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe (although they are currently suspended) and Bangladesh.

The Ashes is the cup trophy at stake for most of the Test Series between UK & Oz.

Other trophies include the Wisden Trophy, contested by England and West Indies; and the Frank Worrell Trophy by Australia and West Indies.

Limited overs

Where teams have a single innings each. Each team bowls a limit of typically 50 overs. The match lasts for just 1 day (weather permitting).

It is the most common form of limited overs cricket played on an international level. Some matches do carry on to a second day due to interruptions or bad weather. The aim of the game is to produce a definite result where a draw is not possible, but sometimes the scores are tied or bad weather gets in the way. The Cricket World Cup is played in the one day format, the last one was won by Australia in 2007. The next World Cup will hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in 2011.

Twenty20 is the newbie to the sport. A form of limited overs, the aim is to complete the match within approx 3 hours, usually in the evening. It was originally introduced in England in 2003, so that workers could watch it in its entirity after their working day had finished. It has proved to be an incredibly successful format and is now played internationally. The next Twenty20 World Championship is being played in UK as this article is being written.

Great Cricketers of the World

Imran Kahn: an outstanding cricketer from Pakistan who played at the highest level for over 22 from his debut in 1971. A great all rounder he led his homelands team to their first world cup just before he retired. He was one of the best all-rounders the game has ever had. Today he is a politician in Pakistan and the leader of a major political party. He played in 88 tests with a batting average of 37.69. He took 362 wickets with an excellent bowling average of 22.81.

Shane Warne: an Australian spin bowler who is one of, if not the, greatest spin bowler the game has ever seen. He retired in 2007. He has taken more test wickets than any other player in history. He was also the first player to take more than 600 test wickets. He played in 140 tests and has taken 685 wickets with a bowling average of 25.25.

Gary Sobers: a highly talented cricketer from Barbados. He played 93 tests for the West Indies and scored an impressive 8032 runs. He had a batting average of 57.78. He was also a very good slow left arm bowler, taking 235 test wickets, with an average of 34.03. He is most well known as the first batsman ever to score six sixes in one over in 1968 in a first class cricket match while playing for Notts against Glamorgan.

Ian Botham: a great English all-rounder. He was an incredible batter and was just as adept as a fast medium paced bowler. He played mainly for Somerset. He played in 102 test matches and scored 5200 runs, with an average of 33.34 and he took 383 wickets with an average of 28.40.

WG Grace: generally recognised as the most influential cricketer the game has ever seen. Born in 1848, he is credited as one of the reasons that cricket became so popular. He had a formidable batting ability and was a bit of a character, telling the umpire at a match when he was out first ball at once, the crowd are here to watch me bat and not to watch you umpire! He played just 22 test matches as they werent as numerous as they are today, and scored 1098 runs with an average of 32.29. He took 9 wickets with an average of 26.22.

Allan Border: still holds the world record for the greatest number of uninterrupted test matches. He was an Australian captain and had the record at the time, for the most runs in test matches at 11174 in 156 tests. He was one of the most prolific hitters of centuries with 27 in test matches. He also took 39 wickets with an average of 39.10.

Shaun Pollock: A medium fast bowler FROM South Africa, famed for his accuracy and reliability. An excellent batsman also, he has scored over 3406 runs in 100 test matches with an average of 31.24. He has taken 395 wickets at an average of 23.25. He is South Africas best wicket taker in both one day international and test matches.

Viv Richards: considered to be one of the all time greats of West Indian cricket. He was a very successful captain to one of the best West Indian sides ever. He was an extremely strong batsman and scored an average of 50.23, scoring 8450 runs in 121 matches. He won 42 of the 50 matches he captained.

Don Bradman: an Australian from NSW, is thought, by many, to be the best batsman of all time. His batting skills were so formidable in the 1928-1929 tests against England, that they resorted to bowling at the batsmen rather than the wickets in an attempt to win. This was known as the bodyline series. The ensuing dispute from this was so bad that it almost caused a diplomatic dispute between England and Australia. He played in 52 tests and scored 6996 runs so he had an incredible average of 99.94. These statistics make him the best batsman ever.
