India and Pakistan hosted the tournament in 1987, and the tournament saw a very close final match between England and Australia which the latter team won by a margin of only 7 runs. The 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand saw a new victor in Pakistan led by Imran Khan; this was the latters swansong in an illustrious career.
The championship of 1996 conducted in the Indian subcontinent saw an amazing performance from an underrated Sri Lanka side, convincingly achieving victory in crickets most prestigious showpiece.
The next three consecutive World Cups were won by Australia in convincing fashion, during a period of continued Australian dominance in international cricket. In final matches they defeated, respectively, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka in their unprecedented feat.
The Cricket World Cup is televised to 2.2 billion viewers in more than 200 countries, making it the third most popular sporting event in the world, exceeded only by the FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics.
