Crowdsourcing - The Future of Custom Music
Crowdsourcing - The Future of Custom Music
Everyone loves music as it is an essential part of life. It is more than just entertainment though, as it's a powerful way to help people experience an emotion. Music touches parts of the human brain that are impossible to access just using visual images. Music has been shown to increase awareness and memory as well. That's why music is so important when used in films or in product branding. Some compelling background music to a film or a catchy advertising jingle used in a radio promotion can do much more to capture people's attention and emotion than just the visual scenes of the movie or a colorful billboard can do alone.
For those inexperienced in the music business however, getting unique music created can seem a difficult and expensive process. For one, an appropriate songwriter or composer must be located. This can prove to be time consuming to find the right type of composer for certain types of music. A well established songwriter may be easier to locate, but the cost of hiring such a well-known artist may make this route impossible for lower budget projects. Another possibility is searching online using services such as MySpace or Twitter. These services are beneficial as most of the time the artist's music is posted directly on their page or a link to their music is easily found. This allows those searching to listen to the composer's portfolio of music before contacting them. This can be a time consuming process though - to search through hundreds of songwriter portfolios trying to discover the perfect one for the project.
Once a songwriter is located, the next hurdle is to negotiate the fee for the music and decide on the licensing of the composition in advance. It is always best to consult with an attorney whenever licensing is being negotiated. There are many possible uses for songs once they have been added to a movie or corporate brand that need to bedecided sooner rather than later to avoid future problems.
So how does crowdsourcing overcome these hurldes? Crowdsourcing is a technique of allowing multiple artists to compete for a specific project by submitted finished works in hopes to be selected as the best. The benefits of crowdsourcing are that the person needing, in this case, music can set the price and the license agreement in advance, and then songwriters around the world can compose the needed music in an attempt to win the prize. By submitting music, the songwriters are already agreeing in advance to the preset price and license agreement. Technology has made the process of composing and producing quality music much less expensive to songwriters allowing them to easily compete if the set prize makes it worth their while.
Another advantage of crowdsourcing is the amount of choices that those needing music receive. Instead of getting one or two samples from working with a single composer, the crowdsourcing method may produce a hundred songs to choose from all specifically tailored to the project. For example, if one needed an advertising jingle for a new product launch, they could describe the product and the genre of music they like and receive 50-100 unique jingles composed for their product. All they would have to do is pick their favorite. Crowdsourcing can save time as well due to the fact that most projects run under two weeks.
Most crowdsourcing platforms also include the musiclicensing agreements to ensure the transfer of the music isseamless. This allows companies to do what they do best and artists do what they do best without having to wait weeks or months while the music license is decided upon.
Most people aren't even aware that music is such an important part of daily life. It is heard everywhere from background music in TV commercials to radio jingles to full movie scores that can bring a tear to anyone's eye. The creation of custom music has long been a process requiring the use ofmultipleorganizations and high cost but this may no longer be the case with the use of crowdsourcing.
