After leaving the boy band NSYNC, Justin Timberlake went solo and wrote the Cry Me a River lyrics for his first album, entitled Justified
. Much the album was inspired by the very public break up between himself and pop star Britney Spears. The lyrics to Cry Me a River are about a man who refuses to take a woman back after she cheated on him.Timberlake initially denied that the song was specifically aimed at any one person, but did say that recording the song, as well as the rest of the album, helped him get a lot off his chest.
Another rumor said that Britney Spears had also written a song in response to Cry Me a River, called Everytime, in which she apologizes.
The hip-hop producer Timbaland helped produce the album, instilling sonic beats and electric pulses, straying from Timberlake's original clean-cut pop boy band image.
The reviews for Justified were generally positive, with critics glad to see a new, darker and sharper side to Justin Timberlake, some even making comparisons to Michael Jackson. Timberlake went on a short hiatus after making the album, claiming in interviews that he was creatively exhausted. He managed to win two Grammys, one for Best Pop Album, the other for Cry Me a River as best pop song.
The Birthday Sex Remix lyrics were written by rapper Jeremih and Mike Shultz, a friend of his in Columbia College. The lyrics were mostly produced on a lark, with the two friends just messing around and having fun making up random lyrics.
From this creation, Birthday Sex became a breakout sensation. When it began radio play at local Chicago stations, listeners would call in, say it was their birthday and request that the song be played. The song would eventually hit platinum certification.
Jeremih was born and raised in Chicago, specifically in the Morgan Park area. His family was entrenched in music, and their musical talent was contagious. He joined several extracurricular activities in high school that were music-oriented, such as marching band, Latin band and concert band.
He played multiple instruments, including drums, piano and saxophone. Although he went to college to pursue engineering, he soon discovered that music was his true calling.
After his breakout hit Birthday Sex, he signed with Def Jam Records and recorded his first album, which was released with positive acclaim. The song Imma Song came out of the album as a hit single.
