Cultural Centre of the Philippines - Home of the Finest in Filipino Artistry

It's hard to get a handle on Manila, as some see it as a collage of contradictory units or an amorphous mass whose individual parts do not, despite its best efforts, appear to merge into a cohesive whole.

Enter the Cultural Center of the Philippines one of the venues that present a clearer picture of the collective attitudes and cultures in the universally loved medium of performing arts and music. Located in Pasay City, Metro Manila, the CCP is in fact the national centre for Filipino performing arts, with a forty-year history of cultural preservation and artistic excellence.

The CCP was created in 1966 by President Ferdinand Marcos himself, in a bid to give the performing arts of the Philippines a proper home. Today it still operates under the auspices of the National Commission for Culture and Arts, showcasing and promoting the artistic efforts and achievements of Filipinos inspiring them to create and contribute to the cultural repository of music and theatre.

Covering broadcast and film arts in addition to visual and literary works, it makes arts accessible to all regions of the Philippines through a number of outreach programmes, workshops, exhibitions, competitions and anthologies. The World Dance Alliance, International Theatre Institute, the Conseil International des Organisations de Festivals de Folklore et d'Arts Traditionnels and the Association of Asia-Pacific Performing Arts Centres are international organizations that actively support the CCP in these endeavours.

Since opening, several internationally acclaimed troupes such as the Kirov, Bolshoi and Royal Danish Ballets have staged performances here. Several companies represent each category of performing arts in the CCP. Philippine Ballet Theatre, the Ballet Philippines, Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company, are all dance companies that are affiliated with the CCP while theatre is represented by the Tanghalang Pilipino Company. Several elite music companies such as Philippines' National Orchestra, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Philippine Madrigal Singers, UST Symphony Orchestra, and the Young Artists Foundation all find a home at the CCP.

The facility has six different performance venues all named after famous artists and equipped to meet the requirements of a variety of large to small scale productions. The main theatre is Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, which is able to hold over 1800 members over four levels and is utilized for large productions such as ballets and operas. The Tanghalang Pambansa, meanwhile, comprises four theatres and is used mainly as an exhibition space. Tanghalang Aurelio V. Tolentino is also known as "Little Theatre" and is used for more intimate performances such as plays, recitals and film screenings. The Studio Theatre, or Tanghalang Huseng Batute, is a two-tiered venue designed specifically for experimental theatre. The Folk Art Theatre Tanghalang Francisco Balagtas was commissioned by Ms. Imelda Marcos herself, and is the largest of the venues, being a massive amphitheatre with a seating capacity of nearly 8500 used for popular concerts and pageants. The last is the Tanghalang Manuel Conde, also called the Dream Theatre, which is the audio-visual room of the CCP and devoted to film screenings.
