Cultural Diversity Thriving In Saint-leonard

The road to establishing Quebec as an officially French-speaking province was long

, evolving throughout the province and in Montreal boroughs such as Saint-Leonard where a dispute erupted about the language in which the communitys children would be taught. The neighbourhood, which was once a separate city, was populated by a large volume of Italian-Canadian residents who nicknamed the area Via Italia or Citta Italiana. Most services in the neighbourhood were available in French, English and Italian. However, the area schools did not provide education in the same selection of languages. The dispute began when Italian immigrants petitioned the local government that their children be schooled in English. The school board refused and insisted that students learn in French.

As a result of the dispute, provincial legislation was introduced outlining that students with one parent who was educated in English in Canada could attend an English school. Those whose parents were schooled in French would be educated in French. Saint-Leonard is now served by two school boards. The English schools are a part of the English Montreal School Board while the French schools are run by the Commission scolaire Pointe-de-lle.

Over the years, Saint-Leonard has become popular among those looking to live near Montreal, but at a distance from the congested downtown core. Saint-Leonard residents enjoy the benefits of living in a family-oriented neighbourhood and have easy access to good restaurants and local amenities. Quebec is Canadas only officially French province but is home to many English-speaking residents as well, making it a bastion of culturally diversity. As a result of the efforts made to maintain the French language within Saint-Leonard, a strong sense of cultural diversity remains.

While Manitoba and New Brunswick are bilingual, Quebec and its largest city, Montreal, are considered the center of French culture in Canada. Montreal is the third-largest French-speaking city in the world and is known around the world for its rich historical landscapes, lively arts community and well-established reputation for good restaurants.
