Cultural Tours Of Morzine
Nowadays the Alpine resort of Morzine is best known for its excellent year-round outdoor lifestyle
, modern facilities and friendly atmosphere. People travel from all over the world to experience the area's vast and scenic terrain, be it on foot, bike, board or skis.
However, Morzine wasnt always like this, and you only have to take a look at Morzines origins as a farming and slate mining community to see just how far this modern resort has come.
For those interested in learning more about Morzines rich history and culture, theres no better way of doing so than experiencing it for yourself, by attending a local guided tour.
There are various tours operating in Morzine, but the following three are among the most popular with tourists of all ages.
Slate mine tour
Back in the 15th Century Morzine was heavily reliant on the slate mining industry, alongside farming, as its main source of trade and local employment. It wasnt until the 18th Century that the first ski club was created in Morzine, marking the start of Morzines transformation into a fully fledged winter resort, and subsequently the demise of slate production in the area.
However, despite this move away from slate mining and production, Morzine is still home to a working slate mine, which can be visited every Friday from at 10 a.m. during the season.
The tour is great way to learn firsthand about Morzines mining history, as local Slate miner Franck Buet will personally show you around the mine, while explaining processes, and demonstrating techniques used in slate production.
Guided tour of the old Morzine town
Despite being a popular ski resort, Morzine has maintained its picturesque Alpine charm and local community feel. The best way to experience this is by visiting Morzines old town, with tours running every Thursday during the season. Alternatively, for those preferring to make their own way around the old town, free illustrated maps showing local places of interest are available from the Tourist Office.
Tours of the stable and cheese dairy
A trip to France would not be complete without a degree of cheese eating, so what better way to mark your arrival in Morzine than a guided tour of the local cheese dairy. Your tour guide will talk you through everything you need to know about cheese production, from milking the cows to the final product, and if youre lucky you may even be able to try some cheese too. Tours run throughout the season, every Wednesday and Thursday at 9am, and daily afternoon visits from 3 to 7 p.m.
Its Morzines rich history and thriving local community which sets it apart from other major ski destinations, and makes it much more than just a ski resort. If youre looking for somewhere to visit this year which offers more than just freshly groomed slopes, look no further than Morzine.
