Cunard To Launch Weddings At Sea In Spring 2012

Cunard Line has announced that it will be providing couples with romantic weddings at sea from spring 2012.

Following the announcement in September that the British cruise company was planning to enter the market of weddings abroad, the company has now confirmed that it will be going ahead with its wedding plans after it recently registered its ships in Bermuda, a British Overseas territory.

Couples getting married abroad will now have another option when it comes to selecting the destination for their special day as Cunard gets set to launch its Weddings at Sea programme next year.

At present it is illegal for British vessels to conduct wedding ceremonies while out at sea but now that Cunard has registered its ships abroad, the law can be bypassed and couples can enjoy cruise weddings without the need of a religious minister of notary.

The cruise line will be offering a range of specialised wedding packages for couples planning destination weddings at sea onboard all three of its magnificent ships.

The vessels have iconic red funnels and royal names such as the Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria, and despite changing its registry from Britain to Bermuda, the ships will continue to fly the British flag.

Peter Shanks , President and Managing Director of Cunard, said: Most of our competitors have been developing increasingly popular and lucrative Weddings at Sea programmes, and these are now very big business in the cruise industry.

We receive a lot of enquiries about the possibility of being married on one of our ships particularly about weddings in mid-Atlantic on board Queen Mary 2, which no other company can offer.

Registering the ships abroad has also meant that the company can make savings on the wages of crew members because the vessels would not be subject to British employment laws.

According to recent statistics, the number of British travellers who took ocean cruises in 2010 reached 1.62 million and the Passenger Shipping Association predicts this number to rise to 1.7 million in 2011.

Many couples are choosing unique weddings abroad over traditional ceremonies at home and several cruise companies are cashing in on the lucrative "weddings at sea" market.

A brochure will be released in November, 2011, providing further details about the new wedding packages, and the Weddings at Sea programme will go on sale in December, 2011.
