Current Health System Necessitates Modifications

Literally thousands of American physicians, that the medical needs of every American

, could be met by the institution of national health insurance, financed by the government, and that this program would lead to billions of dollars in savings. Many physicians now assert, that the resolutions provided by the private sector, have not been effective, since the last attempt at a national health plan came up short. The assertion of these doctors is that the Congressional efforts being made to allow a prescription drug that helps senior citizens and the disabled will only move more government funds to the private organizations and leave very little benefit for customers. The physicians would enact a single payer system, basically a more extensive version of Medicare, the government-run health care initiative for disabled and elderly people.

Health maintenance groups, initiated mainly as health care's exclusive opportunity, have increased the expenses of Medicare by billions of dollars, and they have failed miserably in raising the public's respect. Although investor owned hospitals seemed like they would be more efficient, they've been sullied by scandals. Doctors have also pointed out while the many pharmaceutical and drug companies, that have routinely been earning high profits while being taxed less than any other industry, continue to market their drugs at prices the people who need them most cannot begin to afford. The idea of this single payer system was issued in their esteemed medicinal journal.

The collection of doctors rallying for a national health plan was organized by the previous editor of a prominent American medical publication and two previous surgeons general. A lecturer from Harvard Medical School has stated that our current system will not be able to last for long since it is so evidently destroying itself. It isn't that a singer payer system is the most valuable choice, but it happens to be the only one at all.

However, the American Medical Association is not in favor of the single payer system according to an official statement released by their acting president. He states if the US implements any type of single payer system, it would mean trading off one problem for an whole group of problems that are equally as serious. Declining maintenance of facilities, lag in technology, creation of a major bureaucracy that will take away patients' and doctors' authority in medical decision, and an increase in the wait time at medical offices, are all side effects that the president of the AMA believes will result from the single payer system.

There is also opposition from the American Association Of Health Plans, which happens to be the managed health care industry's lobbying arm, as it would abolish health maintenance organizations as well as for profit hospitals. The American Medical Association states that doctors who would like to sign the article make up less than one percent of the numerous doctors in the entire country.
