The nutritional requirements of dogs vary according to the breed and age of the dog. Some important factors worth considering before buying pet food are as follows:

Age of your Dog

If your pet is a little puppy, then obviously the nutritional requirement would be higher than compared to an adult pet. Consider foods that match with your dog's age and stage of development.

Health condition of your dog

Depending on your pet's health condition, you need to select foods appropriately. Dogs who suffer from diabetes need to be given low glucose foods. There are many dogs that suffer from allergies. Some dogs are allergic to non vegetarian food; hence it is best to avoid pet foods containing non vegetarian food. Discuss with your veterinarian as to the foods your dog can ingest. Your vet will be able to tell you exactly how to handle your dog's medical condition if any, and the foods suiting that particular medical condition.

What about vegetarian food?

Not all dogs are carnivores and many of them prefer vegetarian food. Many pet stores offer vegan pet foods, which have a high nutritional content to take care of the nutritional needs of your pet. You could also prepare a wholesome veg food for your dog, provided your dog likes it. Consider whether your dog suffers from dandruff, diarrhea and so on.

Many vegetarian dogs prefer cooked vegetables. Do not throw away the water if you have boiled vegetables, since it contains necessary vitamins. Many dogs like to have boiled potatoes in small shapes. Dogs also love cooked potatoes, like ones that are roasted.

The body structure and size of your dog

The structure and body type of no two dogs is similar. Some dogs are underweight, whereas some may be overweight. Some dogs are too lazy to go for a stroll and keep lazing around the whole day. There are ultra large dogs as well as tiny dogs. Depending on their type and structure, foods need to be chosen. The vet store has separate counters for different varieties and breeds of dogs, and you could select from them.

The budget

Just like any normal budget, you need to set aside a part of your income for your pet dog. Dog food is costly. If you choose carefully, even if it costs a little extra, you will be providing your pet with the most nutritious food possible.
