There are few ways to get the job done when it comes to cutting ceramic tile in a straight line
. The method of choice depends on the size of the job and or the number of tiles. If you only have a few tiles to cut, you can use what is known as the scoring method. This option can be frustrating and time consuming but effective when used for much smaller jobs.
Use a straight edge to determine the line you want to cut, and then repeatedly go over that line with your scoring tool. Your goal is to create a groove and then deepen it so you are able to snap the tile. When attempting to snap the tile try using something flat like a wire to aid you, avoid using your hands alone. You will want something that can apply pressure across the entire length of the tile.
For most of your jobs you will want to use either a Tile cutting saw or a wet saw. Most people find that the tile cutting saw is the better choice of the two because they are much easier to get the hang of. Although the wet saw has the advantage when it comes to cutting tiles in a curved line, they can be relatively more expensive and hazardous. It's probably something you wouldn't buy unless you plan to do a number of tiling projects. You can rent one but they do not usually come with instructions.
If you are using the tile cutting saw and need to make a couple of small circular cuts, you can buy a rod saw. It is a labor intensive tool with a carbide outer layer that fits into a standard hacksaw frame. It will work for cutting ceramic tile however you may not want to over use this method.
