DIY Bumper Scuff Repair
These types of DIY repairs are the most difficult of the lot. In order to tackle a scuff or scratch repair you need to be confident in your abilities. First you need to make sure you have all the right materials and equipment for the job. If you don't have an air compressor and spray guns, I wouldn't worry, in this how to guide we will be repairing a scuff without them.
For this example we will be repairing a bumper scuff repair. You will need to buy some primer, paint that matches your car, some clear coat lacquer (all in aerosol form), easy sand plastic padding filler and hardener, hot air gun (paint stripping hot air gun), masking tape, carbon face mask (that must be worn when spraying all aerosols and while drying), wet and dry paper 400, 1500 and 2000 grade, alcohol based cleaner, razor blades, cutting compound and polish. Before you start any spray work you must first clean the Bumper Scuff with the alcohol based cleaner. Next use the razor blade to scrape off any burred plastic edges on the bumper scuff. Then mix the filler and hardener for the scuff in the ratios required and quantity needed and spread over the scuffed area with a razor blade pushing it in to the bumper scratches, heat up the filler with the hot air gun (remember not to get too close, its only to quicken the drying time not to burn a hole in). While waiting for the filler to dry mask up all the areas you don't want over spray on to at least a foot of masking. Once the filler as dried, use the 400 grade wet and dry paper to rub back the filler till its level to the surface. Next apply a layer of the primer aerosol and heat up with the air gun. When the primer has dried rub back with the 1500 wet and dry paper until its smooth with the surface, you must continue this process until all the scratches and marks of the bumper scuff are completely filled. When the primer has filled all the minor imperfection it will now be ready to spray.
Shake the paint aerosol vigeroursly for at least 30 seconds, this will mix all the paint mixture together like the metallics and pearlescent that will have fallen to the bottom of the can. Before you spray the repair with the paint you must first get a feel for the flow of paint from the aerosol, if you don't then you might have the paint running all over the bumper, so spray a test area somewhere away from the car first. Once you can control the paint flow and feel confident enough with the paint apply a thin coat over the primed area and heat up with the air gun. Once the paint has dried continue this process of applying thin coats of paint until the primer is fully covered (usually 3 coats) on the final coat try to flick the paint around the edges of the bumper repair this will help blend in the paint. Once the paint has completely dried you can now apply the top clear coat. Again spray a test area with the clear coat lacquer away from the car to get a feel for the lacquer flow. Spray over the painted area with a thin coat of lacquer and leave for at least 5 minutes so the lacquer can settle and don't heat up. After 5 minutes apply a second heaver coat while flicking the lacquer out around the edges of the paint to blend in, and again leave for 5 minutes then heat up until the clear coat lacquer is dry. Now the clear coat is dry use the 2000 wet and dry paper gently over the repair (not the edges) to remove any high points and to level off. Rub over the cutting compound until the lacquer starts to shine, then do the same with the polish until the clear coat is glossier and shinny. Next rub the polish gently over the edges of the bumper repair to blend it in with the original lacquer. Once this is finished the bumper scuff repair is completed, remove the masking tape, and stand back and appreciate your bumper repair.
