In an era in which people are so into doing things on their own, why are we leaving our credit repair to big companies who just want to make money from us? First, you need to check out your credit reports. This is the part that's not free. You should go ahead and get copies of all three reports from the major companies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Look over them separately to make sure you recognize all the credit information, and then compare them. Sometimes they'll have slightly different information, and many times they hold mistakes. In fact, more than half of all credit reports include some sort of mistake!

You can fix these mistakes on your own just by contacting the companies about the problem. There are complaint forms right on their websites, or you can send an old-fashioned letter. Just supply the bureau with as much information as possible, and keep a copy of the letter or email for your records. If the reporting information is actually a problem with a financial entity, such as a credit card company that isn't reporting an account as closed, you may also need to give that company a call. Credit bureaus are required to get back to you within a short amount of time, and normally this is all it takes to get the problem fixed.

As for problems that are with your financial standing instead of the bureaus' reporting habits, you can fix those with a bit of hard work and grit. Your best bet for fixing your credit score fast is to pay down as much debt as you can as quickly as you can. Start with the most volatile debt revolving debt like store credit and credit cards. This will help with the credit repair process more quickly than anything else. You can also, though, put as many of your bills on auto pay as you can so that you never pay bills late again. It will take some time, but this will have an eventual impact on your score.
