DIY Electric Car Battery Care Tips

When you are using a homemade electric car, one of the key components is the battery bank. The batteries are essential because it supply power to the electric motor which will propel the electric vehicle (EV). Hence, it is very important you take good care of the batteries.

One thing to look after when you are doing maintenance on the battery is the voltage level. If for some reason you left the indicator or head lights on, this will definitely reduce the voltage level of the battery bank. Without proper maintenance, the EV parking lights, head lights and indicators will not work properly.

The terminal of the battery must be clean and clear to provide a good connection with the cable connectors. At the same time, you must take care of top of the battery as corrosion will damage the terminals. You can clean the top of the terminals by using baking soda with combination of water.

When carrying the battery, it is best to avoid applying pressure or any force to its side. This is because excessive pressure can cause the acid to spill out of the battery and can be dangerous to your skin. Use the holder on top of the battery unit to lift it.

When checking the charge level of the electrolyte in the battery, use a hydrometer. The hydrometer is a handy tool to check all the electrolytes in each individual cell of the battery. If your battery is continuously creating problems or the performance has been declining continuously, then you have to remove it from your electric car to do a proper charging.

When removing the battery, first detach the negative terminals of the battery and then the positive. Be sure to check all the cable connections carefully. If the connections are not tight enough, you may not be able to start the electric motor.
