. Currently, the sales of DVD technology based players and recorders approximately reached ten billion dollars per year worldwide. With the large number of products available on the market today, it is no wonder why this number continues to be so high.

The mainstay of the DVD market is the standard DVD player, but DVD recorders are becoming a large part of the market. There are three standards of DVD recordable media in the market. DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and DVD-RAM. Each of these specific formats is for specific functions. In all formats of the media except DVD-RAM, there are two terms that are tagged behind the -/+. The R stands for recordable, which is a write once only function. RW is a symbol that the media can be written upon up to 1,000 times before media degradation takes effect.

A DVD-R/RW disc was the first of recordable DVDs and for this reason is compatible with most DVD players. Two varieties of DVD-R discs are available on the market today. Authoring and general formats are for sale, but ensure that your discs are general as the authoring is designed for commercial applications. The storage capacity of this media typically holds 4.7 gigabytes, but the older editions stored only 3.95 gigabytes. The next format is DVD+R/RW and has the benefit of being either single layer or double layer discs. The single layer discs, like their DVD-R counterparts, hold a maximum of 4.7 gigabytes of data. The double layer discs have a capacity level of 9.4 gigabytes. Returning from the days of the VCR, discs can be recorded in high quality, standard play, long play, or extended play modes.

The final format is DVD-RAM that appeared in both the standard sized 12 cm and 8 cm formats. While the 12 cm variants use the same capacities as the DVD+R variants, the 8 cm discs have a maximum storage capacity of 2.8 gigabytes. The primary advantage of this media format is the near hard disk like storage function. When data is stored, it is done in a non-linear fashion so editing video on these discs does not require an entire re-write. Defect management was implemented to minimize content loss by ensuring that the video stream is not written on a defective portion of the media.

DVD receivers are the latest phenomenon in the automobile market. These devices integrate a seemly-unlimited capability to provide the ultimate multimedia experience. These units fit in the slots of the standard AM/FM/CD decks. Depending upon the model, the unit can include a smaller LCD monitor with external jacks to place larger screens in the backseat of the vehicle. Some units include larger displays that overhang the unit. Touch screens have been implemented into most of these systems to improve the ease of use when navigating menus.

The features of a DVD receiver extend much beyond the playing of movies. Almost all receivers have standard capabilities of AM/FM/CD, including MP3 and WMA compatibility. Most of these devices are also satellite radio capable, and can double as a GPS receiver. Depending upon the model that your choose, a rear camera can be built into your vehicle allowing you to view behind the vehicle as you backup.
