DVD Rental for the Adventurous

On the face of it, and even having looked rather more closely

, DVD rental is amongst the least adventurous of activities.

Even going to the cinema requires some level of adventure - something unexpected might happen even at the local multiplex - while staying in your house waiting for the post requires rather less.

Even the process of collating the films to be made in a DVD rental subscription is notably unadventurous.

Online you can check out the films' plots and their reviews, you can even watch the trailer, so there's far less chance of picking a dud, as there is in a normal DVD rental store on the high street.

So, how can DVD rental benefit the adventurous? I'll suggest three ways that this could be the case.

First, the DVD rental sites have a much larger selection of films than any cinema or DVD rental shop in the UK - that means more odd choices, obscure movies and extreme choices that can be attractive to the adventurous.

There is less adventure, perhaps, in finding them but in any case they can still sate the adventurous person's longing for the original, the interesting and the downright odd.

What's more this oddness can be indulged without any financial issue - getting those adventurous films costs just as much as the conventional ones - and, in fact, you may be able to get the less popular titles quicker as less people request them.

This is true even of services which seem the most conventional - such as Lidl Movies - since these are owned by larger sites and so still have large selections of titles.

Second, there are films available which can inspire adventures.

A walker I know swears by the 'Wainwright Walks' series to plan out their next jaunt to the lake district and relive their last one, for example.

On a less practical level how many tourists have been drawn to Casablanca by the famous film of the same name? How many to Africa after seeing 'Out of Africa'? How many to Vegas after 'Showgirls'?

There may be no replacement for actually going somewhere but a bit of sofa travelling now and again can rarely be beaten.

Third, by using a judicious DVD rental free trial those that move around a lot can get many movies for free.

The free trials and limited to a household so moving will mean you're able to rent for free many more times than those who stay in one place.
