Dale Carnegie's Tips - How To Be A Great Leader - Learning The Characteristics Of A Leader
If you want to know how to be respected by people you cannot go wrong with reading a book by Dale Carnegie
. This article marks the fourth and final in a series I have been doing on explaining some of his key points and how you can use them to become a more incredible person in your relationships
Today we will talk about what Mr. Carnegie had to say about leadership. A true leader begins with praise and appreciation of those who are following him/her. Take the time out to think of several sincere things that you can say in admiration of those who you are leading. When you have to call attention to a person's mistakes, do it indirectly. I have found a great way to do this is to talk about the standard and let the person realize on their own that they have not met it. Then it is their concept and they will take hold of it much better.
When you need to get across a message try asking questions instead of orders. You can kick another person's brain in gear by asking them questions. If they are serious about getting things done when you use questions it will cause them to realize things that need to be accomplished. Once again you are letting them come to the realization rather than ordering it. When a person messes up extremely bad, let them save face. There is no benefit in demeaning people, especially in front of others. It only sows unhappiness.
Use encouragement and make their mistake seem easy to correct. When they do well, lavish them with praise. Be generous in your praise and stingy in your rebukes. When you give the person a fine reputation to live up to you will find that many rise to the occasion. Finally make the person happy about accomplishing the things you suggest. If you attach that reputation to it you will give them a sense of pride. Most people love to think about one thing, themselves. If you attach their job, worth in a partnership, or love in a relationship to their self image most people will go to great lengths to do the best they can.
There is no doubt that great leadership skills can be taught. Take the ideas I have given you and use them. When I first read this stuff I thought, "It sure sounds soft". But what I found is that most of the time you can catch more flies with honey than you can with a fly swatter.
