Dangerous Termites Arrive In South Florida

Scientists are baffled and homeowners are in a widespread panic

. The Nasutitermes corniger termite, a termite native to the Caribbean, has officially arrived in South Florida, meaning pest control companies have been on high alert as of May 8.

While termites of any kind can be highly-destructive, costing millions annually in property damage for homeowners, what makes the Nasutitermes corniger termite even more dangerous is that because it lives above ground, there isnt a natural predator for it. In other words, theres no natural competition with the native subterranean termites of Miami, Naples, Fort Myers, and West Palm Beach, meaning this invasion could raise the number of termites in a concentrated area by 25-30 percent, according to Rudolf H. Scheffrahn, professor of entomology at the University of Florida.

The Nasutitermes corniger termite possesses a strong affinity for hardwood, meaning no ones homes or belongings are safe. The hardwood floors, wooden shelves, cupboards, wooden beds, tables, furniture, and bookcases inside can attract these dangerous termites, as are the very walls, of a home. Window shutters, outdoor patios, pool decks, or even the wooden handles of gardening equipment can all become prey. Even leaving firewood in a shed or outside next to your home can lure these termites inside.

The Florida Department of Agriculture is currently addressing the issue, which first arose in 2001 but was thought to have been eradicated with the help of aggressive anti-termite sprays. But early this month, they were discovered again in South Florida. The department, along with pest control experts hope to prevent the foreign termite from colonizing along with the 20-plus species of termites that already live in Florida.

Thankfully, unlike the other 20-plus species of termites, Nasutitermes corniger termites are large enough to be seen by the eye, meaning you dont need special equipment to find them. In fact, they look like ants. You should check wooden structures all around and inside your home to feel for any hollow areas. You will also notice little lines left in the wood. If youre unsure, its best to call a pest control experts who can properly diagnose the problem.
