Trees can be a very advantageous addition to any landscape. They provide homes and shelter to animals, work to reduce soil erosion (which can prevent natural disasters such as mudslides), provide oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, and make the surrounding area more aesthetically pleasing. Taking all of these qualities into consideration you might be wondering why there would ever be a need to remove a tree. Well while trees are excellent additions to a landscape, they can also be potential hazards and liabilities.

Canopy Growth

There are many ways trees can become potential hazards. One of the most common is through poorly managed branch and canopy growth. If the canopy and branches of a tree aren't properly managed then they can grow around or too close to overhead utilities. This creates a very real threat of the tree taking out the overhead utilities. As these utilities are usually power and phone lines it makes it especially dangerous because the downed power lines can cause the tree to catch fire and electrifies the area around the power line. This makes it even harder to extinguish the tree fire as water cannot be used until the electrical company is notified and the power to that line is switched off. It is because of this, and the fact that it is the responsibility of the owner of the land that the tree is on to take care of the tree, that having a tree that is not properly maintained can become not only a serious property, injury, and fire hazard, but also a large financial liability to the owner. That is why it is recommended that an arborist be routinely called out to perform preventative maintenance on all your trees. This usually consists of pruning the branches and canopy of the tree.

Damaged, Diseased, And Dying Trees

Sometimes the tree becomes diseased, damaged, or just gets old and starts to die. Trees that exhibit any of these symptoms are immediate fall hazards. Anything around the tree is in danger if this situation arises(homes, buildings, people, power lines, etc..). The tree can fall during events such as windstorms or even without any provocation if it is diseased, damaged, or dying. If a tree you own exhibits any of those signs it is important you contact an arborist immediately so that they can come remove the tree. It is highly recommended that you don't attempt to remove the tree on your own as this can be very difficult to do without causing damage to nearby objects, especially in situations where the tree is adjacent to homes or power lines.

The roots of trees grow into almost anything. It is because of this that they can damage underground structures and utilities such as sewage, foundations of homes and buildings, underground power lines, and water pipes. Only very skilled arborists can determine if your tree is, or will soon become, a serious hazard to underground structures and utilities. It is because of this that most of the time a tree is recognized as a hazard to underground utilities after it has already cause some damage. If this occurs you need to call a licensed arborist to remove the tree, as this process can be extremely difficult and may need to be carried out in participation with the city's utility companies.
