Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan to varying degrees all of these actors have played the suave, sophisticated, and seemingly timeless and immortal spy that is Bond, James Bond 007. It is hard to beat the sophistication of Mr. Connery or the timing and professionalism of Mr. Moore, but in my humble opinion,
Daniel Craighas been the best James Bond to date.
So what do I meant by that always fluctuating term best well, to me, Daniel Craig is best because for sole reason the he is not the best.
This might sound counter intuitive, because it is, but the Craigs Bond took the fictional character out of the realm of obscurity and fantasy, and into a believable role. Too some viewers, the movies may have been evolving. The gadgets got better, the plots more fantastic, the villains more dastardly, and James became even more fantastic. But that is the problem James Bond shouldnt be a fantasy. I want to believe that this super spy is believable and able to pull off these feats again and again.
Pierce Brosnan was the epitome of this degradation. His invisible cars, perfect cars, women, and hair drove me insane. Bond has a history of being played by a handsome actor (some might argue against the case with Connery), but Brosnan was the epitome of the pretty boy and everything about his movies were put to the extreme. The character of Q was always quirky, but casting John Cleese as the brain behind the gadgets was just too much. I love the British comedian, but his casting is the perfect example of what was wrong with the latest Bond movies before Craig took on the role.
Daniel Craig
acts as the mans man in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall. He is the most rugged actor to portray the British spy, and might even lose to Connery in the looks department, but he brings a realism to Bond that no one else could not. No other representation has come close.
Daniel Craig revitalized the spectacular spy the same was Jason Borne and Matt Damon revitalized action movies. Gone are the silly villains with outlandish plans of world domination or destruction. The current Bond struggles with villains that are economic threats as much as they are worldly threats, tapping into the fear that the world economy currently faces.
He also is not afraid, or at least does not turn away from, of being the bad guy. MI-6 becomes as much of an enemy to Craig as Gold Finger ever was, and this is a welcome refresher. In the same vein, Daniel takes his lumps and keeps them like any special agent would. He forsakes the suave and sophisticated approach for torture chambers and beatings that would leave a lesser man break. He is tough, resilient, and relies more on his wits than his gadgets than any Bond before him. Daniel Craig, is the best bond yet.
