Dapeng T2000 Review - The Chinese Multimedia Mobile Phone

The fairly newly opened cell phone manufacturer Dapeng, has begun selling their line up outside China. One of the newest phones is
DAPENG T2000, often referred to by Dapeng as a media phone. Dapeng makes this statement due to the fact that they claim it has excellent speakers, has a MP4 player and MP3 mix, will allow watching TV programs and listing to FM radio, and has the ability to see video and pictures in 16:9 format.
After trying this phone out, here is what I think.
The
DAPENG T2000 TV CELL PHONE Good
Speakers That Are Impressively Loud: As advertised, the built in speakers are quite loud and clear. I got the opportunity to take the T988 outside outside a stop on a metro line with quite a crowd present, and just like what was said, the speakers were still very audible.
Useful Accelerometer Control Scheme: Besides simply navigating menus via keys or touchscreen, you are allowed to give a quick shake to control certain functions (aka Shake Control). I find it an interesting and quick way to move around phone menus and to control some apps.
Viewing Movies In 16:9 Format: The accelerometer also allows you to change a movie from 4:3 perspective to 16:9 simply and easily by rotating the phone to the side.
The
DAPENG T2000 wifi CELL PHONE Ok
Unlocked + Quadband: This cell phone is quite nice in that it need not be tied to any carrier, and can be useful worldwide.
Handsfree Bluetooth: I found pairing with Bluetooth devices, but the range on the one I tested was a mere 1 foot, little use if you want to pair with other phones.
The Bad
A Ear Splitting Start Up Music Intro: I did find the speaker system quite nice, but when you start the phone, the speakers go FULL blast with the annoying start up music which you can not mute.
Access To the Internet: Mobile browsing is possible if you don't mind using WAP, but I want at least EDGE speed. No wifi as well also annoys.
Crappy Camera: Forget good camera phone pics, as the resolution is bad, your pics will look quite bad even by expectations usually given to camera phones.
Lack Of Java: I think this cell phone would have been a better deal if I could at least add some java apps allowing the T998 to get some new functions and games.
Lack Of File Support For The MP4 Player: The phone's move player only will play files in 3GP format. If using the video camera, it informs you that your clip is an AVI file, but, very annoyingly, if you download AVI, they don't work.
Final thoughts
As you might expect from the title, this phone is at least an ok media player. I would say that it is better for playing music than movies, but if you can find or convert some videos to 3GP format, then the movie player is solid enough. This phone has all the basic functions you need, and also has enough extras to warrant its price.
