Earlier Darjeeling was ruled by the kings of Sikkim. Later Gorkhas invaded the city and ruled until the British rule. The British changed this place as their summer resort to escape from the oppressive heat of the plains. The name Darjeeling is said to be derived from the word, Dorjeeling which means the land of thunderbolts. The tourists are attracted by the scenic beauty and the moderate climate in the summer for a vacation to the city of Darjeeling. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway journey, which found a place in the UNESCO World Heritage site, from Darjeeling to Jaipalguri in a toy train is very mind blowing. The zigzag movement of the train through the high elevated hilly areas catches the heavenly beauty of the city. The maiden journey of the toy train was in 1881 and it covers the distance along the beautiful sal, teak and toon trees. Darjeeling is home to a countless variety of flora and fauna and we can see tiger, leopard, white cat, bears, jackals and monkeys. It has been calculated that Darjeeling houses 4000 species of flowering plants and 600 varieties of birds.

Ava Art Gallery, Rock Garden, Ganga Maya Park, the oldest botanical garden, Llyod Botanical garden and Nightingale Park are some of the main attractions for the tourists in Darjeeling. Tiger Hill is a popular spot situated at a distance of 13 km from the city of Darjeeling from where one can see the sunrise over the Kanjunjunga Mountain. Darjeeling is home to a lot of monasteries. Trekking and water rafting are some of the adventure activities in the city of Darjeeling. A tea plantation tour can be organized by which one can walk around the tea gardens and enjoy the serene surroundings. There are 86 tea gardens which produce 10 million kg of tea every year in Darjeeling.

Various festivals celebrated here showcase the culture and diversity of the people of the Darjeeling city. We can see a blend culture of Indian and Tibetan. Durga Puja is celebrated grandly every year. Diwali, Holi, Christamas, Losar- one of the festivals of Tibetans, New Year, birthday of Lord Buddha are some of the popular festivals.
