Man proposes and man disposes. Human kind has always dreamed and cherished the impossible. But of late, the unfeasible seems to have a lot of potential. Enter a new word for the unknown, unheard of, unseen and mystery laden. Welcome to dark fiber. No science fiction, myth nor fable. Merely another random word given to a few odd miles of cables lying unused below the surface of the planet.

To understand better, let us back track a bit. It would be a safe bet to assume that you love watching those pleasurable, unblemished, undistorted images that come through to you via your TV set, while you relax in your favorite couch or even curl up in your bed. Well you can say thank you to the wonders of the world of fiber optics for that.

For that matter, even those all so clear voices on your telephone, attribute it to the fiber optic cable. Oh no, it is nothing new in case you did not know. Doctors have been using this technology since quite some time now. That is the reason why it has become easier to do operations. With the help of this fiber novelty, the good doctor is now able to see your insides, without having to split you open.

It is quite asinine to leave these exorbitantly extravagant cables just lying about underground doing nothing. A consummate waste of money, effort and time to say the least. But the minds at work that run huge conglomerates have hidden insights as to what they are doing. Thus is with these cables that appear to be a sheer indulgence in wastage.

Money is at work here. Immense and unimaginable amounts looming larger than the horizon. Profits are already being worked upon in the account books as to what to make of these unused optics under the soil of the Earth. Laying extra cables and letting them be idle is deemed to be very money spinning now. An asset of the present and the future.

When these colossal organizations begin their cable laying at the very onset, they lay down a few superfluous miles. There is significance to it. The answer is very straightforward. If they needed more of the stuff later, they would not have to go through all the costs of labor and equipment and time to re-lay. So it is done at the very onset.

Also, it is more beneficial for these conglomerates to leave extra lines lying around unused. Simply because of the bare fact that they make money from this fiber possum venture, by leasing those out to other companies who do not want to go through all the trouble and economical squander of cabling.

The populace of the world is not a diminishing one but quite the opposite. And as rises the number of people, so is augment the demand. There is now more need for untouched fiber optical layering. Companies that deal in telecommunications are rising to this opportunity.

Banks and colleges are suddenly seeking dark fiber. And the companies that own this goldmine are reaping the need.
