Nestled in the moors, which is wilderness England style, is Dartmoor. Moorland is an expanse of area with low growing vegetation and hills with no cultivation. Dartmoor - Devon is part of a National Park and covers almost 400 miles. This area has its own strange weather patterns that can change in a moment with mist descending without notice. As such it was the perfect setting for Sherlock Holmes novel, The Hounds of Baskerville, creating a magnetic and cryptic background.

The Dartmoor National Park has lots of paths for hiking. Along the way you can see prehistoric remains and Dartmoor Prison which is in the heart of the park. This prison was built in 1806 to house the prisoners taken from the Napoleonic Wars. It then served to hold the rebel American prisoners from the War of 1812 being considered one severe prison. Still in use today it has mellowed throughout time and now only low risk prisoners are housed here.

There is much to see and do with the tastes of every person being considered. For the outdoorsy type the park or Lyford Gorge are tremendous places to hike and be one with nature. The Gorge is home to the River Lyd and the White Lady Waterfall is one of the amazing sites to hike to. The wildlife and plants will amaze and thrill you with their beauty and abundance.


If you are lucky you can see the Dartmoor ponies. Residing in this area of Devon for over a thousand years they are sweet and powerful animals that used to haul the tin for the mines. With good temperaments they are perfect for a young one to have for a first horse. However, they are endangered so take your pictures when you can.

The Finch Foundry is a site to see for insight into the history of metal and the way it is manipulated. It is the only foundry still working in present time in this country that uses water for power. There are three large water wheels creating the power. In its heyday it manufactured hundred of tools a day.

The history of the country is undeniable and this area of England is no different. The Castle Drogo was a more recently built castle that was started in the early twentieth century by Julius Drewe. The family lived there until it was given to the National Trust, who are the guardians and facilitators of the precious history and homes of England. The stunning location of Castle Drogo on the moors gives it a mystical quality rich in grandeur.

The history of the area is balanced only by the magnificence of these moors. This large expanse of area called Dartmoor - Devon gives you ample opportunity to see the land, trod over it by foot, and immerse yourself in the culture it possesses.
