Data Migration Basics

You have a new computer but you still want to get the programs and other important stuff from your old computer

. The process you need to go through is what we call data migration. The process is not easy at all and can take you some time in doing it. This article can give you ideas on how to properly go through it.

There are many approaches that you can use in doing data migration. If you are just simply upgrading from one computer to another and will still be using the same operating system, then you can use the file and setting transfer wizard from Windows. All you need to have is a straight cable or your computer should be in network. This process involves transfer of data from one computer to another. This works best between 2 computers with the same operating system but still might involve many issues after the transfer is done and most of the time some programs are not working or certain users settings are gone. This process can be done as well between two different operating systems but you might have more incompatibility issues in doing so.

The use of third-party software is another way of doing data migration. There are many options to choose from, you just need to see if it will be compatible to your operating system. Some companies offer such services wherein they will be remotely controlling your computer, installing the software and beginning to initiate the transfer. This approach is the easiest and fastest way to have all of your files transferred right before your eyes without you having to lift a finger.

This last approach is doing the transfer of files manually. Just simply use an external hard drive for copying files or burning files to a CD. It might be a back-and-forth process but still effective and less complicated. When it comes to your programs you can just reinstall them and update them once you have your internet going.

Whatever approach you chose, just remember to always back up your important files and to keep those important CDs just in case you need to reinstall them again in the future.
