Datalogic Powerscan PM8300 Cordless Scanner Funtionality by:Carl Shackelford

The new Datalogic Powerscan PM8300 (redesigned from the old PSC Powerscan) series

of scanners has some very important characteristics that may be valuable for you know about. This scanner is actually three scanners in one. The Datalogic PM8300 functions equally as a Batch, Cordless, and can even have keys and display like a mobile handheld. The applications that fit this unit are many and varied.

As a display type Scanner there are 2 main types of configurations available. The three key and sixteen key versions are the two options with display. Both the three and sixteen key units are similar to the obsolete Motorola P370 and Motorola P470 series, with keys and display. The Datalogic PM8300 three key with display allows for editing of scanned barcodes in batch mode. The sixteen key with display, can actually be used to enter barcodes that cannot be scanned.

As a normal cordless scanner like many cordless scanners, the Datalogic Powerscan PM8300 barcode scanner, works like any cordless scanner. Once the PM8300 is setup in this regular mode, the scanner is much like the Motorola LS3578 or the Motorola P370 series. The main difference is the price is lower, but all the normal functionality and more are available.

As a Batch type Cordless scanner, this scanner can replace the obsolete Motorola or more appropriately named Symbol P360 or Symbol 460 scanner. The Datalogic PM8300 Powerscan can operate in 2 modes. The first is in Manual Batch mode where the scanner is setup by scanning configuration barcodes. This sets the barcode scanner ready to scan all barcodes, until you scan a configuration barcode code which releases all the barcodes to your system, much like the old P360. Basically this was a way to scan a group of barcodes outside the normal cordless range of the scanner and later when brought back into zone, it would allow you to download all the barcodes at once.

The other mode is Automatic Batch which is setup by scanning a configuration barcode. All barcodes scanned will then be transmitted if the base is in range of the PM8300 Scanner. If the scanner is out of range, it will hold everything scanned until it is back in range.

The new Datalogic Powerscan PM8300 took all of the best of the old PSC Powerscan and combined those features, and added all the features of the other scanners in to one scanner. There are many improvements not mentioned here. Applications like TAS-Tool Accountability Systems, Fixed Assets, Inventory Control, and other Logistical systems are perfect for this cordless scanner, and it is a tough industrial unit on top of everything else. Also, this is a great replacement for the obsoleted Symbol P360 and Motorola P370, with keys.
