Dating In The Age Of Wireless Internet

Everyone knows at least one couple who broadcast their entire relationship on Facebook

every nauseating status update, every personal love note delivered via wall post, every mawkish picture album full of engagement photos is yours to behold in the age of wireless Internet. No longer do you have to avert your eyes when a hot-and-heavy couple makes out on a crowded subway line or at a popular restaurant. Now youre confronted with the romantic lives of your friends, acquaintances, and coworkers every time you turn on your computer!

Even worse is when a couple breaks up. Suddenly your newsfeed tells you that Amanda Marcus is no longer in a relationship. You then a series of status updates quoting Alanis Morisette or Dashboard Confessional lyrics. Then comes a rush of vaguely-worded supportive wall posts from friends, which is inevitably followed by at least one photo album of a sloppy girls/boys night out complete with heavy eyeliner, black tube tops, and sweaty mid-dancing shots in the former case and baseball caps and black muscle t-shirts in the latter.

To the cynical, these cycles can seem all-to-predicable. Some of you may be so grossed out by the new forms of PDA available in the age of wireless Internet that you might want to forgo sharing your relationship on social media all together. But if youre like one of the millions of Americans for whom these websites have become an important part of their social lives, this can be easier said than done. Photos get tagged, revealing wall comments get made. So how do you manage the online publicity of your relationship if youre on the shier side? Or, if you do tend to share, how can you think ahead to prevent the humiliation of having the (most likely) inevitable decline of your relationship play out on the Internet? Here are some tips that everyone can use.

Social networking sites like Facebook allow you to state that youre in a relationship with someone and link directly to his or her profile, specifying everything from its complicated to engaged to married. (No word on when theyre going to add legally separated). It can be tempting especially in the rosy early days of a new romance to proclaim your feelings for the whole world to see. And those who are married or engaged might be happy to declare theyre off the market to dispel unwanted attention. But remember that if and when you do break up, the change in this status will be broadcast to every single one of both your friends over newsfeed. Do you really want that girl from your freshman dorm finding out you got dumped on her 4G phone while shes on a business trip in Atlanta? Probably not. So use relationship status declaration very sparingly.

Do not post mushy things on each others walls. Everyone can see these. Theyre embarrassing even when youre still in love. If you must declare your feelings, use a private message. Wireless Internet has provided many new, private ways of communication!

Finally, be selective when posting pictures. Obviously you might want to share pictures with your family and friends of the vacation you took to Greece, but try to keepy kissy-face/bedroom shots to a minimum. When you break up are you going to go back and delete them? Or just let them sit there as a reminder of what once was for eternity? Moreover, consider only sharing these more intimate photos with a smaller circle. Your coworkers might not want to see 85 pictures of when you proposed.
