RETURN TO THE SEXIEST CITY ON EARTH
I took an overnight train out of Odessa and ended up staying up way
too late drinking vodka with a local named Sergei. He was a native Russian who was more then a little whack after a tour of duty in Chechnya and a recent breakup with his Ukrainian girlfriend. The more we drank the the more I worried about falling asleep next to the dude.
I woke up in Kiev very hungover and looking around for Lena who had greed to meet me at the train station. She was nowhere to be found so Sergei suggested we go with his friend Sasha to get some breakfast. We rode the metro to a dodgy looking and completely foreign restaurant on the edge of town with a menu written entirely in the Ukrainian language. They ordered me red borsch and a beer.
It was 8am and I was still drunk from last nights vodka fest, but Sergei showed no signs of the previous nights debauchery. I was really hoping for a Dennys Grand Slam and a bottomless cup of coffee, but instead was stuck drinking Ukrainian lager and soaking my coarse black bread with spicy red broth. I kept checking my phone for some sign from Lena but there was nothing.
Around 9am I agreed to go to Sergeis friends for a barbeque. After a sketchy cab ride to the edge of Kiev, we got to Sashas place. It was time to get the grill going and meet everyone. There was Andrei and a couple of nice young deyvotchkas working in the kitchen and all were beyond friendly to their exhausted and hungover guest from Hollywood. I sat down to eat around 10 and another bottle of vodka came out. By 11am I was shit canned and my hosts showed no sign of slowing down. At noon I pretended I had heard from Lena and asked them to call me a cab to meet her.
The cab took me to the hotel Lybid, where I proceeded to pass out for several hours. I awoke from a text from Lena on my Iphone. Im so sorry! I was sleeping! I will meet you in a taxi at your hotel at 9pm! Where are you staying?
At last, I had a date, some rest and reason to throw on my glad
rags. Lena had stood me up at the train station, but I was hoping shed make up for it by taking me out for a big night on the town in Kiev. This is why I had come here and I was ready for anything and everything.
