Dating Younger Women - Dealing With The Age Difference

Dating younger women is something you don't normally give much thought to because it doesn't affect you, right? Only now it does. Generally the woman *is* younger than the man, but what if she really is *much* younger than you?

Here are three tips that will help you handle the situation.

1. Don't let age spoil things.

The fact that she's still dating you means that she doesn't consider the age difference to be insurmountable. This means a longer term relationship is quite possible.

Focus on the things that you have in common, and downplay the age gap. Don't pretend it's not there, but don't let it dominate your relationship either. If she's happy about things there's probably no cause for you to worry.

2. Talk about any potential problems early on in the relationship.

Don't keep all the worries to yourself. Share them with her, and encourage her to do the same with any worries, age related or not, that she has. You may be concerned with whether it really is love, or just mutual convenience.

Perhaps you are reasonably well off and she values financial security very highly. There's nothing wrong with that, but beware if that's the only thing she seems interested in.

Conversely, is it the sheer youth and vigour of the younger woman that puts you in the category of men dating younger women? Will the physical demands of her lifestyle be a problem for you? When the time and place are right, just talk about these things with her.

It helps here if you don't take yourself too seriously. If you're 31 and she's 19 then you could joke that when you're 51 she'll be 39, and when you're 83 she'll be 71. This helps shrink the perceived age gap and make light of the issue.

3. Be prepared to stand up to outside criticism.

You're both bound to face criticism from family and close friends. They may say that you, an older man, may be physically and socially unable to satisfy her for long. After all, don't men of your age prefer to spend their evenings sitting in front of the fire wearing slippers?

And you'll face the obvious innuendoes relating to the physical attributes of a younger woman. Best to go along with that, or even to revel in it if you want to keep your friends (who may envy your ability to date women like her). But always come back to the real values and interests that you and your young girlfriend have in common.

Make it clear that it's the personal relationship that counts, and that you're not just an older man who likes dating younger women for the sake of it.
