We started Pana.ma in early 2009 with the idea that voice could become a major new

development in the mobile communication trend of messaging because it does something entirely overlooked -- it adds the tone, texture, emotion and meaning we hear in others voices back into a social web inundated with text and emoticons. Pana.ma challenges how we use SMS, but it also challenges the clunky experience of voice mail, of being 'screened' when we call, and then going through the endless routine of listening to computer voice tell us what we can do, and then all we can hope for is a call back, which we ourselves will screen followed by the eventual exchange of text messages. We set out to eliminate that experience from the culture, entirely. When we connect in our social world with our voice and spoken words, we have a different power of communication and we intuitively know this, but I must say, it is almost entirely taken for granted. Human voice has always carried the emotion and meaning of our thoughts voice is even more powerful than drawing, painting, and often writing I rate it second only to touch in the realm of how we connect with people, and in the universe of the web, until now, there has been no 'voice'. Socially, we are becoming more public with our private lives in ways we heretofore could hardly imagine - at the same time, we are also becoming more 'asynchronous' in our communications less direct, more 'on our own time' [the way it used to be when all we had was letter writing]. 'Out-of-sync but always in touch' is the biggest shift in communication in our lifetime and in our children's lifetimes an altogether new mode of communication where we give 'partial continuous attention' to everyone in our network, where conversations never really end, but continue, changing course, topic, adding and subtracting participants, moving forward and backward over time. My sense is that this new use our voice within our text 'conversations' will shift us toward more the use of voice on the web, and more toward a genuine exchange of emotion and meaning. I see it daily when I show our app to kids, and even the odd adult begrudges the 'utility' of not having to text all the time. So the breakthrough(s) in mobile communication will be back to the future using voice, out of sync, as one very small way to connect us, to express ourselves, out loud.
