The Government has tabled the Women's reservation bill in parliament on International Women's Day. Women's reservation bill has been one of the most contentious pieces of legislation to be considered by Indian parliament. It has been hanging fire for close to 14 years due to lack of political consensus on the issue. Women in India won't be empowered by a single piece of legislation in the parliament. The effort of women empowerment should be backed by affirmative action by Corporates in India and changes in mindset by its people.

Economic empowerment of women is the need of the hour for isolating them from abuse, oppression and intolerance. Women face several challenges in the corporate world compared to men, the foremost of them being child care. Many women struggle to find a balance between work and family life. Fortunately some progressive employers are offering onsite childcare for women employees. Understanding the importance of childcare and the impact on the employee's performance, employers have begun to offer a variety of dynamic work life balance programs. While partly or fully supported by the employer, the on-site child care facility is usually located within the employee's work location and is supervised and controlled by the employer's contracting child care agency. For many prospective women employees, this is an excellent employee benefit, often leading the way to accepting a position at a company the employee would otherwise not accept.

With India recording more than 10% growth in its GDP, the Corporates in India desperately need to attract and retain talented and skilled women employees. Providing care for the employee's children in the office premises results in reducing attrition, absenteeism and thereby having a positive impact on the organizational goals. Child care costs are also tax deductible making it lucrative for the employer to provide the facility in the campus. According to studies conducted in the western world, every 1$ spent on child care results in $10 saved as employee benefit.

With more and more women joining the workforce, the Government should also discuss on putting in place a policy making it mandatory for all establishments, public and private, that employ women to provide for crches and day-care centers at the workplace. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has done some study to this effect. This must also apply to all workplaces where there is a demand for day-care by at least five women for children in the 0-6 age group. It is also equally important to sensitize builders for providing such facilities while formulating their blue prints for buildings and offices.

As we progress through the 21st century, corporate India is becoming more savvy and creative in the employee benefits offered in an effort to not only retain current employees but also attract the new employee. With child care as a major issue affecting employee performance and attendance, offering a childcare option, through on-site services will provide for increased productivity and adds to affirmative action by Corporates to bring back women to the office.
