The Cliffs of Moher might just be the most spectacular sight in Ireland. Located just about an hour from Doonbeg Golf Club, the Cliffs rise out of the Atlantic to great heights, and are best viewed and appreciated from the sea. Cruises along the Cliffs can be arranged from May to October, where you can stare up in awe at this rugged section of coastline that stretches for 8 kilometers.
The Aran Islands, which can be seen in the distance from the Cliffs of Moher, are just a short ferry ride away from Doonbeg, making them another perfect day trip. These three beautiful isles are each known for something different; Inisheer has a thriving colony of nesting birds, Inishmaan is a botonists dream, and Inishmore is known for its ancient stone forts and churches. Ferry service is available from April to September and it takes less than 30 minutes to reach the nearest island.
The Burren is another worthy daytrip while visiting Clare County. A limestone plateau encompassing over 100 square miles, this spectacular landscape is home to various flora as well as many species of animals and birds. While in the Burren area, it is also recommended to visit the Burren Smokehouse, where you can watch fresh salmon being smoked, as well as shop for gourmet cheeses and wines. Burren is also home to a perfumery and floral centre where essential oils can be seen being distilled and blended. You can also tour an organic herb garden and enjoy organic cuisine in the rose covered Tea Rooms.
While exploring Clare County, Ireland, make sure to also visit two different, spectacular caves. The Doolin Cave features the largest stalactite in the Northern Hemisphere, a unique geologic phenomenon. Measuring almost 7 meters in length, it is one of the largest free hanging stalactites in the world and is held on by a large section of calcite. Alternately, the Ailwee Cave near the Burren is one of the most ancient caves in the area and possibly in Ireland. A guided tour will take you through 1.3 kilometers of passageways showing animal remains, waterfalls and numerous cave formations.
