De La Hoya Expects to Find Gold in Brooklyn
At the heart of Golden Boy Promotions "stabbed in New York is its recent agreement
with Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment to bring at least a dozen shows each year for the Nets' future home, the 18,000-seat Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
But the company also made a veteran fighter Brooklyn Paulie Malignaggi, another opportunity to develop the warm suburb Danny Jacobs, and also consider the company's Los Angeles should establish an office in New York.
"Shooting is not the right word," Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said when asked to describe the company's goals. "We intend to engage in an aggressive manner, and by all means."
This can not very well with rival promoters who have a lock on the market for many years.
Golden Boy has worked mainly in Nevada and California, with several stops in Europe, but has ignored the East Coast. That all changed in the past two years, when the company held a successful exhibition at the theater at Madison Square
Garden in Malignaggi both promoted by Lou DiBella and junior welterweight holder Amir Khan.
Now there are many more events planned for the Barclays Center, scheduled to open in 2012 in the context of developing long-awaited 22-acre sites in the Atlantic.
The project works well in the boxing arena, a number of seating configurations to cut about 4,000 small exhibitions. video cards hanging from the central court allows the replay and the relatively low level of luxury suites also draw.
Perhaps the greatest thing to go to the scene, however, is its location.
The district in the East River in Manhattan has produced many world champions Malignaggi and Zab Judah to Mike Tyson and Riddick Bowe. It was also home to Ebbets Field, home of about 90 cards out of combat before it was demolished, and small shows are always held in places like the Aviator Sports and Events Centre.
"I'm very excited for his thing about the Brooklyn boxing golden boy will bring back," said Malignaggi, a former champion who has made a move official this week's Golden Boy.
Added Jacobs, a contender for increasing average weight: "This is very exciting for me, boxing to be back in Brooklyn s always been my dream to win the world championship, but to win the championship in Brooklyn in front of my people, that would really be something.. "
Golden Boy is planning a series of fights at Barclays Center, the Golden Gloves he has a rich history of New York for small business cards with local fighters, rather like the "Club Fight Night" events which is at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
And of course there is a high-profile matchups on the scene, when the opportunity arises.
"When all around you are jealous, it's generally a good thing," Schaefer said, referring to the animosity that might emanate from rival promoters. "That means you're really something."
