DePuy has announced the worldwide recall of two popular hip implant devices in August of 2010. The two recalled models are the following: 1. DePuy ASR XL Acetabular Hip System, which was sold internationally since 2003 and in the United States since 2005; and 2. DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System, which was only sold outside of the United States since 2003. Many US citizens may have been implanted with the ASR Hip Resurfacing System in procedures done in foreign countries.1. Schedule An Appointment With Your SurgeonOne of the easiest ways to determine if your device has been recalled is to schedule an appointment with the surgeon that implanted your hip device. If this is not possible, then contact your surgeon's office or the hospital where the procedure was done. If you have a recalled DePuy hip implant device, your surgeon's office should be aware of this and should be able to confirm whether you were fitted with a recalled DePuy hip implant device. If for some reason this approach is not successful, then you do have other options.2. Check Your Medical Device ID CardFollowing your hip implant surgery, you may have been given a medical device screening identification card for the purposes of getting through metal detectors at security screenings, such as airports. The medical device ID card may indicate the specific hip implant device that you were provided. Unfortunately, not all medical device ID cards indentify the specific make and model of the hip implant device.
