If you have had hip replacement surgery in the last seven years, or since July 2003, you may have an implant that is the subject of the DePuy hip replacement recall and DePuy lawsuits. DePuy Orthopedics, after years of complaints, has finally issued a recall for its ASR hip replacement systems. Only the full hip replacement was used in the United States.

Why a Recall

According to the DePuy Orthopedics' website, it issued a voluntary recall of its ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System. However, there are other companies which manufacture hip replacements, so patients have to confirm that they have the faulty device through their doctor.

The ASR hip is made up of metal ball and socket components that move against each other during normal operation. These components wear over time, generating tiny particles that are released into the body and may enter the soft tissue. Some patients have had adverse reactions to these particles, resulting in build-up of fluid in the joint and muscles. It may cause pain and swelling, and possibly infection, if it goes untreated. If you do in fact have a DePuy hip replacement device that is a part of the DePuy recall, your doctor may want to perform tests and monitor the hip closely.

Some symptoms you may experience are severe and debilitating, while others are simply uncomfortable. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and instability, especially when walking. If you are experiencing such symptoms after having an ASR hip replacement, you should contact your doctor to determine a course of treatment. Lawsuits
