Deactivated Weaponry Meeting The Specs

There are many different specifications listed that need to be adhered to in order

to comply to those laid out for the deactivation of guns, obviously dependent upon the type of weapon in question, but in each case will involve essential components. These will include things such as bolts, barrels and locking systems. Diameters will be specified, but the deactivation will involve the welding of steel rods into bores and pins or plugs driven into chamber cones. The more prohibitive the weapon the more stringent the specification becomes.

With regards to muzzle loading weapons, the breach end must have a barrel obstruction inserted to deny access for even a powder charge and in some circumstances a dummy firing pin is fitted. The more sophisticated the firearm the stricter the deactivation specification, with a thorough inspection and in some cases a double inspection undertaken, before the weapon is passed as acceptable and given both certification and a proof stamp. The general deactivated weapons standard requires the receiver to blocked by weld runs that continue right into bolt carrier rails and channels to prevent any future usage as a firearm.

In certain situations aluminium alloy will have been used in fabrication and these will necessitate the employment of inert gas welding techniques to complete the deactivation procedure. Any weapon which uses bolt-carrier assembly must either have it completely removed, or in certain circumstances as much as half of it removed, which would allow the original appearance of the gun to be retained. Additionally, it is essential that sears, internal hammers and fire selector switches are welded together, so that a single fused mass can be created. This process has the effect of deactivating the body of the weapon still further. Full compliance is absolute, there are no exemptions.

Deactivated weapons might be modern or could date back to pre World War I. Good examples of these include: The old WWI SMLE with bayonet and scabbard which dates back to 1916 and was deactivated in 1991 but to the previously permitted specifications, allowing it to be stripped, cocked and dry fired. The US M1 Garand rifle was the first true semi-automatic to be utilized by an infantry of any nation. Used throughout WWII and the wars in Vietnam and Korea this special weapon is a favourite amongst collectors and has been deactivated with a moving cocking handle, trigger and safety switch.

Then there is the MAC-10 fitted with a dummy silencer and used by dozens of countries all around the globe and a firm favourite with Special Forces, this weapon of compact design was deactivated in 1992. The Russian made Makarov dates back to 1975, is a cold war classic and the choice of the infamous KGB. However, possibly the most popular of products that have been deactivated is the amazing Enfield Martini which dates right back to 1879 and was actually used by the heavily outnumbered British against the Zulu's at Rorke's Drift. These and many others are now collectors items and in a way the deactivating process ensures their longevity. Today's manufacturers are now creating some incredible new weaponry but there were some wonderful guns built over the past century or so and although no longer in use they still have plenty for which to admire.
