Dealing With Bullying In The Workplace

Workplace bullying is unfortunately still an issue for some

. But thankfully there are some things that can be done to reduce bullying in the work place and hopefully get rid of it all together. Whether the bullying comes from someone simply being nasty, caused by stress or some other reason, it can be stopped.

If the bullying is caused by stress, then perhaps the employee simply need to learn some time management tips so that they do not take out all their frustrations on others. If the person responsible is playing games, has an ego, or is simply being nasty, there are ways to deal with this too.

The first thing to remember is to try and stay calm and act professional at all times. Reducing yourself to the lows of the bully is not good. Try not to be provoked, instead walk away from the situation. Once you have processed the situation you can decide whether to deal with the issue yourself or approach a manger to report the bullying. Whatever you do, do not risk your career and reputation because of a bully. Easier said than done, we know, but so important.

Dont be afraid to speak out. Reporting work place bullying is vital if we are to eliminate it. The bully cannot get away with their behaviour. Determine if the bully is simply targeting you, or are they targeting other people too. If they are targeting other people too then you can get other people to support your claims. If it is just you, then think about asking a trusted colleague to watch out for any signs.


Remember that it is not your fault if the bullying is unprovoked. The reasons why people bully in the work place are varied, but now is not necessarily the time to worry about that. All you need to do now is stay strong and accept that it is just bad luck that they are targeting you.

Having said that, if you can work out why they are being such a bully then you may be able to stop it this way. Perhaps they are jealous of your recent promotion, or maybe they simply think you are better looking than them. Maybe they just enjoy being mean to others, or maybe they are scared of something and are taking it out on you.

Even if you are not the one being bullied, but you are reading this because you have noticed it happening to a colleague, you can help by either approaching the bully, and telling them you know what they are doing, or you can approach the person being bullied and ask them if everything is okay.


Every work place should have a bullying policy that outlines behaviors that will not be accepted. The issue here is that what some might take offence to, someone else may not be bothered by it. However there are general behaviors that are generally unaccepted, not matter where you work or who you are. Deliberate intimidation, manipulation or physical violence is obviously not tolerated in any work place. The bullying could come from either a manager or an employee, either way it is unpleasant and should be dealt with quickly.

A great strategy here is to engage a human resources professional with experience of dealing with work place bullying. A professional can help you to set guidelines on what is and is not acceptable behaviours at work, and can also set out clear disciplinary actions for certain types of bullying. By talking to a professional human resources person you gain easily gain perspective and set out a relevant and practical guide to tackle workplace bullying before it becomes out of hand.

Most of us go to work to earn our money the honest way, get a sense of achievement and have a good time with our colleagues. This is a right that should be enjoyed by all and any form of workplace bullying is simply not accepted anymore. Better communication, time management tips and policies within the work place can all help to eliminate the issue.
